BoneScalpel – Safety matters

The BoneScalpel is an ultrasonic device that enables safe and controlled bone removal. It is designed to provide clean cuts through hard tissue while sparing adjacent soft tissues.

What is the clinical problem?

During an invasive spine surgery, surgeons need to pay a lot of attention to not penetrate blood vessels, neural structures or other soft tissue structures. Cutting compact bone using common technologies is very challenging for surgeons. No soft tissue should be penetrated, the blood loss needs to be minimized and the bone loss should be as small as possible. This requires often long surgery times and leads to hand fatigue of the surgeon.

The BoneScalpel overcomes that challenges by its tissue-selective cutting method and makes a controlled bone cutting with reduced blood loss possible.

How does BoneScalpel work?

The BoneScalpel consists of two components: a sterile handpiece with additional tips and ultrasonic console.
The handpiece receives an electrical signal with a nominal frequency of 22.5 kHz from the ultrasonic console. The input signal is converted by a piezoelectric transducer into mechanical oscillations. These oscillations are further amplified to achieve efficient cutting characteristics, resulting in a linear, piston-like motion enabling an effortless dissection of compact bone. Because of this longitudinal movements, soft tissue will not be penetrated due to its original elasticity, while hard tissue gets easily cutted.
The integrated continuous irrigation of the BoneScalpel creates a tamponade effect wherefore bleeding can be significantly reduced.

What are advantages of using the BoneScalpel?

The BoneScalpel provides a controlled bone cutting with reduced blood loss. Because of its easy handling, the surgeon hand fatigue can be reduced and surgery times can be decreased. The BoneScalpel is tissue selective, meaning that no soft tissue will be incised.
